How to Train Your Brain to Stay Focused | Entrepreneur Magazine

As an entrepreneur, you have a lot on your plate.

Staying focused can be tough with a constant stream of employees, clients, emails, and phone calls demanding your attention. Amid the noise, understanding your brain?s limitations and working around them can improve your focus and increase your productivity.

Our brains are finely attuned to distraction, so today?s digital environment makes it especially hard to focus. ?Distractions signal that something has changed,? says David Rock, co-founder of the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Your Brain at Work (HarperCollins, 2009). ?A distraction is an alert says, ?Orient your attention here now; this could be dangerous.?? The brain?s reaction is automatic and virtually unstoppable.

While multitasking is an important skill, it also has a downside. ?It reduces our intelligence, literally dropping our IQ,? Rock says. ?We make mistakes, miss subtle cues, fly off the handle when we shouldn?t, or spell things wrong.?

To make matters worse, distraction feels great. ?Your brain?s reward circuit lights up when you multitask,? Rock says, meaning that you get an emotional high when you?re doing a lot at once.

Ultimately, the goal is not constant focus, but a short period of distraction-free time every day. ?Twenty minutes a day of deep focus could be transformative,? Rock says.

Try these three tips to help you become more focused and productive:

1. Do creative work first. Typically, we do mindless work first and build up to the toughest tasks. That drains your energy and lowers your focus. ?An hour into doing your work, you?ve got a lot less capacity than (at the beginning),? Rock says. ?Every decision we make tires the brain.?

In order to focus effectively, reverse the order. Check off the tasks that require creativity or concentration first thing in the morning, and then move on to easier work, like deleting emails or scheduling meetings, later in the day.

2. Allocate your time deliberately. By studying thousands of people, Rock found that we are truly focused for an average of only six hours per week. ?You want to be really diligent with what you put into those hours,? he says.

Most people focus best in the morning or late at night, and Rock?s studies show that 90 percent of people do their best thinking outside the office. Notice where and when you focus best, then allocate your toughest tasks for those moments.

3. Train your mind like a muscle. When multitasking is the norm, your brain quickly adapts. You lose the ability to focus as distraction becomes a habit. ?We?ve trained our brains to be unfocused,? Rock says.

Practice concentration by turning off all distractions and committing your attention to a single task. Start small, maybe five minutes per day, and work up to larger chunks of time. If you find your mind wandering, just return to the task at hand. ?It?s just like getting fit,? Rock says. ?You have to build the muscle to be focused.?

Obama Signs 'Fiscal Cliff' Bill With Autopen

HONOLULU, Hawaii - President Obama has signed the "fiscal cliff" legislation into law via autopen from Hawaii, where he is vacationing with his family.

The bill to avert the "fiscal cliff" arrived at the White House late this afternoon and it was immediately processed, according to a senior White House official. A copy was delivered to the president in Hawaii for review. He then directed the bill to be signed by autopen back in Washington, D.C.

The Bush administration deemed in 2005 that the use of the autopen is constitutional, although President George W. Bush never used the mechanical device to replicate his signature on a bill.

The office of legal counsel found at the time that Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution allows the president to use the autopen to sign legislation, stating "the President need not personally perform the physical act of affixing his signature to a bill to sign it."

Obama has used the autopen twice in the past to sign legislation, both times while he was overseas.

Use of the autopen has been controversial. Conservative groups alleged last summer that Obama used an autopen to sign condolence letters to the families of Navy SEALs killed in a Chinook crash in Afghanistan - a charge the White House disputed flatly as false.

In 2004, then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was criticized for using an autopen to sign condolence letters to the families of fallen troops.

And in 1992 then-Vice President Dan Quayle even got into some hot water over his use of the autopen on official correspondence during an appearance on "This Week with David Brinkley."

Obama, who arrived back in Hawaii early Wednesday morning to continue his family vacation, spent the afternoon golfing with friends at the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay.

Obama is slated to remain in Hawaii through Saturday.

Misbun Ramdan positive to elevate his status in international arena ? Badminton News

Malaysia?s budding shuttler Misbun Ramdan Misbun ended last season by claiming National Champion title and now he is confident to capitalise this splendid win in 2013.

The young but spirited Men?s Singles expert served notice of his potential by overpowering World Number 21 Wei Feng Chong in the title match of Maybank National Circuit Grand Prix Finals.

Now Misbun Ramdan is in high spirit to make best out of this timely win as he declared this success just a beginning and showed intentions to participate in Super Series tournaments.

He said, ?There are so many things that I would like to do in 2013. Of course, I want to compete in more Super Series events and improve my ranking. So this is a good start for me.?

In the National GP Finals, he displayed commendable fighting spirit and cast out higher ranked Wei Feng with an impressive result of 13-21, 21-18 and 21-18.

The 21-year-old Misbun took some time to read his rival?s game as he lost first set but he managed to rise from the dust in ending two games and saved the honour in a splendid manner.

Both compatriot shuttlers started the grand finale with couple of gruelling rallies and grasped the attentions of local spectators.

They kept the audience glued to their chairs throughout this segment of the showdown and earned great deal of admiration for putting a decent effort.

Though, Wei Feng bagged this vital match point with 21-13 score but story was entirely different for him in the following games.

Misbun Ramdan, who also won Pahang Open in October, employed all of his brilliance in the game and brought the contest to right balance.

He did not show any sign of bewilderment and amazed everyone with a strong backlash which helped him to clinch second match point with 21-18 margin.

This development boosted his confidence as he played with even more conviction in the decider and sealed a splendid victory with 21-18 total.

Misbun admitted that he changed his game plan and played with more patience to raise the trophy. He also vowed to work for the betterment of his badminton skills. ?

He said, ?I tend to be hasty on court. That is the biggest mistake that I usually make while playing. And being hasty means I make mistakes. I need to learn to be more patient.?

Now the young Misbun is all set to participate in Malaysia Open qualifying tournament from January 15, 2013.

$100 million legal claim in Newtown school shooting is withdrawn ...

Adrees Latif / REUTERS

A U.S. flag hangs over stockings left as a memorial for victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, along a fence surrounding the Sandy Hook Cemetery in Newtown, Conn., on Thursday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

A $100 million legal claim filed against the state of Connecticut in the wake of the deadly Newtown elementary school shooting has been withdrawn for now, local media reported Tuesday.

New Haven, Connecticut-based attorney Irving Pinsky said he dropped the claim because he was evaluating new evidence, according to a report on?CTPost.com.

Pinsky said he did not rule out further legal action, the report said. He did not respond immediately to Reuters requests to comment on the report.

The attorney filed the claim last week on behalf of an unidentified 6-year-old survivor of the Newtown shooting at a primary school that left 20 children and six adults dead on Dec. 14.

The survivor, referred to as Jill Doe, "has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury, the nature and extent of which are yet to be determined," the claim said.

State Attorney General George Jepsen on Monday called the claim misguided and said a public policy response by the U.S. Congress and the Connecticut state legislature would be more appropriate than legal action, according to a spokeswoman.

"Our hearts go out to this family, and to all the children and families affected by the Newtown shootings," Jepsen said in a statement. "They deserve a thoughtful and deliberate examination of the causes of this tragedy and of the appropriate public policy responses."

By law, any claim against the state must be approved by the state claims commissioner before it can move forward. The state attorney general serves as the state's defense attorney.

"The Office of the Claims Commissioner is not the appropriate venue for that important and complex discussion," Jepsen said in his statement.

"Although the investigation is still under way, we are aware of no facts or legal theory under which the state of Connecticut should be liable for causing the harms inflicted at Sandy Hook Elementary School," he said.

According to the claim, the unidentified child heard "cursing, screaming, and shooting" over the school intercom when the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Pinsky's claim said the state Board of Education, Department of Education and education commissioner failed to take appropriate steps to protect children from "foreseeable harm" and had failed to provide a "safe school setting."

Pinsky said last week that he was approached by the child's parents within a week of the shooting.

Lanza shot and killed his mother and killed himself as well, police said. The violence has prompted extensive debate about school security, gun control and the suggestion by the National Rifle Association that schools be patrolled by armed guards.

Lanza?s father, Peter, claimed his son's remains on Thursday, and private arrangements were held over the weekend at an undisclosed location, a spokesman for Peter Lanza said.

(AP) ? A kid for Kimye: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their first child.

The rapper announced at a concert Sunday night that his girlfriend is pregnant. Kardashian was in the crowd at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall with her mother, Kris Jenner, and West's mentor and best friend, Jay-Z. West told the crowd of more than 5,000 in song form: "Now you having my baby."

The crowd roared. And so did people on the Internet.

The news instantly went viral on Twitter and Facebook, with thousands posting and commenting on the expecting couple.

Most of the Kardashian clan also tweeted about the news, including Kim's sisters. Kourtney Kardashian wrote: "Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"

West, 35, also told concertgoers to congratulate his "baby mom" and that this was the "most amazing thing."

Representatives for West and Kardashian, 32, didn't immediately respond to emails about the pregnancy.

The rapper and reality TV star went public in March.

Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries in August 2011 and their divorce is not finalized.

West's Sunday-night show was his third consecutive performance at Revel. He took the stage for nearly two hours, performing hits like "Good Life," ''Jesus Walks" and "Clique" in an all-white ensemble with two bandmates.
