By Demian Russian

Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) - Connecticut School Shooting - Doctor RadioOn a very timely and special edition of Sirius XM Radio?s (NASDAQ:SIRI)?Doctor Radio Reports, host and veteran journalist Perri Peltz, along with a team of world-class doctors and experts ? including?Glenn Saxe, MD, the Arnold Simon Professor and Chair, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, director of the NYU Child Study Center,?a physician scientist with a focus on the psychiatric consequences of traumatic events on children ? will take calls and examine how to begin a recovery after the tragic events that took place on Friday.

SiriusXM?s Doctor Radio Reports: Healing After the School Shootings in Connecticut?will air live on December 17th from 11:00 am ? 12:00 pm ET on SiriusXM Doctor Radio (Sirius and XM Radio channel 81). Listeners nationwide are encouraged to join the discussion by calling?1-877-NYU-DOCS (I-877-698-3627) emailing?docs@siriusxm.com?or sending a question or comment via Twitter @NYUDocs.

Peltz?s will be joined by the following guests on?Doctor Radio Reports: Healing After the School Shootings in Connecticut ??

  • Glenn Saxe, MD, the Arnold Simon Professor and Chair, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, director of the NYU Child Study Center,?a physician scientist with a focus on the psychiatric consequences of traumatic events on children, especially the identification of the bio-behavioral processes by which symptoms emerge and persist
  • Adam Brown, PsyD., Clinical Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Clinical Coordinator of the Stress, Trauma and Resilience Treatment Service at the NYU Child Study Center & NYU School of Medicine,?specializes in treating post?traumatic stress and trauma in kids
  • Michael Aronoff, MD, Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine, co-host of the weekly psychiatry show on Doctor Radio, specializes in family/couples therapy and forensic psychiatry
  • Betsy Schur Levy, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist in New York City with a full time private practice for children, adolescents and adults, consulting psychologist at 92nd Street Y Nursery School

Peltz and the panel of experts will explore a wide range of issues and offer advice and experts on topics including:

  • How to help young children deal with concepts of death, dying and feeling safe:?What should you say to kids who are dealing with post traumatic stress syndrome and acute trauma??What impact does a traumatic event like this have on the children who were there, their families (and extended families) and the first responders? What do you say to a child who lives in a nearby town, who is now scared to go to school? ?How do you answer your 5-year old who asks if this is going to happen at their school?even if they live in a different state, or across the country in California or Washington State? For the children who were in the elementary school, or who had a younger brother or sister who was there and got out safely, how do you help a child process what happened ? and how can siblings be there for each other? ?How can parents keep the lines of communication open for their children who are in acute need of help? How do you help a child who saw the horrific events unfolding ? either other students covered in blood, or a dead teacher or dead classmates, or even just hearing the sound of bullets? How do you answer kids who ask if there are evil people in the world who do these kinds of things? Developmentally ? how do kids understand death?
  • The mental health of the adults?parents, first responders, friends, extended family, members of the community and others?coping with the trauma and stress of the tragedy: How can the families suffering losses cope with the unbearable grief? What can you do to calm the fears of your children?and yourself? ?How can people cope with a general sense of hopelessness ? a feeling that the world is spinning out of control, with constant horrible tragedies? How can we help people who feel like they don?t have a right to be upset about the situation to cope with their feelings about what happened (ie? I wasn?t there; I don?t know anyone involved; I know someone involved, but it wasn?t my child, spouse)?
  • Trying to understand the mindset of young people who kill: What triggers their violence and can it be prevented? why would an adult go into an elementary school and kill innocent children? Was he mentally ill, and what types of mental illness could drive someone in this direction? How can we ?find? people at risk, someone who might do something similar in the future?
  • Media coverage:?How helpful are things like Saturday Night Live?s cold open this week featuring the New York City Children?s Chorus singing ?Silent Night? to pay tribute to the adults and children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School? How can we ?zone out? the intense media coverage ? the visuals which are flashing on the screen of the ?shooter? Why do we seem to have a basic human ?need? to know every detail of these horrific events? Is this a recent development, based on our media culture? Or more wired into our human-animal nature?
  • Teachers:?Addressing the heroism of the teachers who gave their lives, paying tribute to teachers? dedication to their students and doing everything they could do to protect their students.

Dr. Saxe joined NYULMC as Chair of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Director of the Child Study Center in October 2010.? He came to NYULMC from Harvard Medical School and Boston Children?s Hospital where he served as the Associate Chief of Psychiatry for Research and Development. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Saxe has been a pioneer in research on the identification of bio-behavioral processes that lead to traumatic stress in children.? He is responsible for publishing some of the first studies of childhood Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), as well as initial findings of bio-behavioral risk factors for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in acutely traumatized children.? In 2005, his team published the first study of candidate genes as a risk factor for PTSD in children.? Dr. Saxe is also the principle developer of Trauma Systems Therapy (TST), a treatment model for traumatized children and families designed to be integrated into usual systems of care.? Currently, TST is used in over 40 agencies across 13 states.? The manual for TST, Collaborative Treatment of Traumatized Children and Teens: the Trauma Systems Therapy Approach, was published in 2006 by Guilford Press and was recently translated into Korean.?? Dr. Saxe received his undergraduate degree from McGill University and his medical degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.? He completed residency training in psychiatry at Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a fellowship in traumatic stress disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital in Boston.

Role of oxidative stress in diseases needs to be re-evaluated: Preventive detention for oxidizing agents

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Oxidative stress is believed to cause a number of diseases. Up to now, it has been common practice to measure oxidative stress levels by determining the oxidation state of a small molecule called glutathione in cell extracts. Scientists from the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) have been the first to discover that cells under stress deposit their oxidized glutathione in a cellular waste repository. This protects cells from oxidative stress -- and questions the validity of the conventional measuring method.

Cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis -- the list of diseases which have been linked to oxidative stress is long and even includes the very process of aging. Oxidative stress is caused by so-called reactive oxygen compounds, which include the notorious "free radicals." If a cell is exposed to more reactive oxygen compounds than it can instantly degrade, it is under oxidative stress. As a result, important components such as proteins, DNA and lipids are oxidized and thus get damaged.

To determine whether a cell is under oxidative stress, scientists often analyze the oxidation state of glutathione. Glutathione is a small molecule which gets oxidized to protect the cell from reactive oxygen compounds. In theory, the amount of oxidized glutathione should therefore indicate whether a cell is healthy or under oxidative stress. However, researchers in the team of Associate Professor (PD) Dr. Tobias Dick have demonstrated that this hypothesis, which is the basis of a large number of scientific studies, is deceptive.

"Up to now, it was necessary to destroy the cells in order to measure the amount of oxidized glutathione," Tobias Dick explains. "However, this means that any spatial resolution is lost." Therefore, virtually nothing was known about where exactly oxidized glutathione is found in the cells. Scientists have presumed that it remains in the cytoplasm, where it is formed.

To find out more about the whereabouts of glutathione in the cell, Tobias Dick and co-workers developed biosensors which indicate the oxidation state of glutathione in intact cells by releasing light signals. In yeast cells, the researchers were able, for the first time, to follow the path of oxidized glutathione through the living cell in real time. They were surprised to find that, rather than remaining in the cytoplasm, it promptly gets locked up in a safe depot, the vacuole.

The cytoplasm, where all important cellular metabolic processes happen, is thus reliably protected from oxidative damage. Cells that would have been considered to be under oxidative stress using the conventional method appeared entirely healthy in their cytoplasm. Tobias Dick and his team could subsequently show that this is not only true for yeast cells but also for various mammalian cells and also for cancer cells.

These results mean that -- contrary to previously held beliefs -- the level of oxidative glutathione does not indicate whether or not a cell is under oxidative stress. "Therefore, it is important to re-evaluate prior studies that have established a link between oxidative stress and various diseases based on the conventional method."

The Pi Store Is a One-Stop Shop for Raspberry Pi Software

The Pi Store Is a One-Stop Shop for Raspberry Pi SoftwareThe open-source computer Raspberry Pi has already fueled a ton of great DIY projects since it was first released. Now, it also has an official app store to quickly snag software, check out tutorials, and more.

If you're new to Raspberry Pi, the store is built-in to the newest version of Raspbian. Since it just launched, the Pi Store doesn't have too much variety. That said, the Pi Store does have some great, free software like despotify (a Spotify client for Raspberry Pi), and LibreOffice. If nothing else, it provides a simple way to install and run software known to work on the Raspberry Pi. You can install the store directly with this sudo command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pistore

You'll find a few games and other software as well. It's a good place to check out if you're a beginner with Raspberry Pi, or you just want to spark a few ideas for what you can do with it.

Zurich puts Sandy storm damage claims at $700 million

ZURICH (Reuters) - Zurich estimates that damage claims relating to tropical storm Sandy, which hit the United States in October, will amount to $700 million in its fourth-quarter earnings.

The Swiss insurer's announcement on Monday also said that it expects $58 million of "reinstatement premiums due on reinsurance covers". The company gave no further explanation. It is due to report quarterly earnings on February 14.

The storm, which killed 132 people in the United States and Canada on October 29, led to power outages, disruptions of public transport and massive damage to infrastructure.

U.S. insurer AIG said it expects post-tax losses of at least $1.3 billion from Superstorm Sandy, while Travelers Companies Inc and Swiss Re estimated their claims burdens at $650 million after tax and $900 million before tax respectively.

Sandy is expected ultimately to be the second-costliest catastrophe in U.S. history, with insured loss estimates as high as $25 billion. The costliest catastrophe was hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Remove Tree Sap From Your Hands with Toothpaste

Remove Tree Sap From Your Hands with ToothpasteIf you've just picked up a live tree for the holidays you may have unfortunately come in contact with sticky and hard-to-remove tree sap. One way to easily remove it from your skin is by using toothpaste as Reddit user Celesmeh points out.

You'll need to put a large dab of toothpaste on your skin where the sap is stuck and spend a few minutes manually rubbing the toothpaste into the sap and then wash your hands with soap. The abrasives in the toothpaste should break down the sticky sap and allow you to wash it away with soap.

You can also remove sap from your hands using salt, from your carpet with rubbing alcohol, and from hardwood floors with mineral spirits. Photo by Steven Depolo

Republicans must move on tax rates: Democrat Reid

Well, this is nice. Though the marriage was called off once in 2011, it seems that 86-year-old Hugh Hefner and his 26-year-old fianc?e, Playboy's Miss December 2009 Crystal Harris, are finally going to tie the knot at the end of this month. Yes, the couple went and got their marriage license in Beverly Hills and have set the date for New Year's Eve, which will be festive, because Hugh will already be dressed up like Father Time, as is his duty every year. ...

VanTrust Real Estate brings first new spec warehouse to ...

The first new speculative warehouse development in the Indianapolis market since 2008 is now complete and ready for occupancy.

VanTrust Real Estate is the developer behind the market?s first new investment grade facility since that year, a building located at 2450 Stanley Road in Plainfield, Ind.? At 450,000 square feet, this facility, known as Project One, comes with the modern features that today?s distributors want, including a 32-foot clear height, ESFR fire protection, high-efficiency lighting and a 10-year real estate tax abatement.

The project made sense for VanTrust thanks to the lack of available industrial space in the Indianapolis market, said Dustin Looper, vice president of industrial services at Colliers International|Indiana Region.

The Indianapolis market has seen little new construction during the last five years, including in the industrial space. This has had a positive impact on both demand and buiding values.

?When looking at historical supply and demand, there is simply not enough warehouse space available to satisfy the market, should demand stay consistent as it has for the past few years,? said Looper, who is also the listing broker for VanTrust?s development, in a written statement. ?Even with VanTrust?s building and the other 2.5 million square feet of bulk industrial space currently under construction, the market could possibly experience another shortage of warehouse space in the relatively near future given our historical levels of absorption.?

Though the industrial market was not as strong this year as it was in 2011, this project and others will make 2012 a solid year in the industrial real estate sector with the market?s average industrial vacancy rate dropping from 7.51 percent to 5.21 percent, as of the end of the third quarter.

Commercial brokers working the Indianapolis market aren?t surprised by these numbers. They?ve seen demand for industrial space rise, and they don?t expect the trend to reverse any time soon.

Andy Weeks, vice president at VanTrust Real Estate, summed up the reasons behind the strength of the Indianapolis industrial market well in a written statement of his own: ?This market has consistently proved to be an attractive real estate solution for many corporations, and we?re quite excited to be in the center of it.?

Apple, Samsung face off in court again

SAN JOSE (Reuters) - Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics squared off again in court on Thursday, as the iPhone maker prepares to convince a U.S. district judge to ban sales of a number of the Korean company's devices and defend a $1.05 billion jury award.

Apple scored a sweeping legal victory in August at the conclusion of its landmark case against its arch-foe, when a U.S. jury found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad and awarded it $1.05 billion in damages.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh is expected to address a range of issues at the hearing, which began Thursday afternoon. They include setting aside any of the jury's findings on liability, juror misconduct, and the requested injunction.

Twenty four of Samsung's smartphones were found to have infringed on Apple's patents, while two of Samsung's tablets were cleared of similar allegations.

Koh began by questioning the basis for some of the damages awarded by the jury, putting Apple's lawyers on the defensive.

"I don't see how you can evaluate the aggregate verdict without looking at the pieces," Koh said.

Samsung's lawyers argued the ruling against it should be "reverse engineered" to be sure the $1.05 billion was legally arrived at by the jury, while Apple said the ruling should stand as is.

FIERCEST RIVAL

Samsung is Apple's fiercest global business rival, and their battle for consumers' allegiance is shaping the landscape of the smartphone and tablet industry, and has claimed several high-profile victims including Nokia.

While most of the devices facing injunction are older and, in some cases, out of the market, such injunctions have been key for companies trying to increase their leverage in courtroom patent fights.

In October, a U.S. appeals court overturned a pretrial sales ban against Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone, dealing a setback to Apple's battle against Google Inc's increasingly popular mobile software.

Some analysts say Apple's willingness to license patents to HTC could convince Koh it does not need the injunction, as the two companies could arrive at a licensing deal.

Apple is also attempting to add more than $500 million to the $1 billion judgment because the jury found Samsung willfully infringed on its patents.

Samsung, for its part, wants the verdict overturned, saying the foreman of the jury in the trial did not disclose that he was once embroiled in litigation with Seagate Technology, a company that Samsung invested in.

Both Apple and Samsung have filed separate lawsuits covering newer products, including the Samsung Galaxy Note II. That case is pending in U.S. District Court in San Jose and is set for trial in 2014.

Forty years after the last Apollo spacecraft launched, the science from those missions continues to shape our view of the moon. In one of the latest developments, readings from the Apollo 14 and 15 dust detectors have been restored by scientists with the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

"This is the first look at the fully calibrated, digital dust data from the Apollo 14 and 15 missions," said David Williams, a Goddard scientist and data specialist at NSSDC, NASA's permanent archive for space science mission data.

The newly available data will make long-term analysis of the Apollo dust readings possible. Digital data from these two experiments were not archived before, and it's thought that roughly the last year-and-a-half of the data have never been studied.

The work was presented on December 6 at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, as part of a session organized in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 17 launch. Also presented in this session was a similar effort to fill in gaps in the Apollo 15 and 17 heat-flow measurements, the only such measurements ever taken on the moon or any planetary body other than Earth.

The recovery of these data sets is part of the Lunar Data Project, an ongoing NSSDC effort, drawing on researchers at multiple institutions, to make the scientific data from Apollo available in modern formats.

The Lunar Dust Detectors that were placed on the lunar surface during Apollo 14 and 15 measured dust accumulation, temperature and damage caused by high-energy cosmic particles and the sun's ultraviolet radiation. The same kind of instrument had flown earlier on Apollo 11 and 12 (Later, Apollo 17 carried a different type of dust detector).

Restoring the data was a painstaking job of going through one data set and separating the raw detector counts from temperatures and "housekeeping" information that was collected to keep an eye on how healthy the Apollo instruments were. A second, less complete data set indicated how to convert the raw counts into usable measurements. But first, the second data set had to be converted from microfilm, which had been archived at NSSDC in the 1970s, and the two data sets had to reconciled because their time points didn't match up exactly. Most of this meticulous work was carried out by Marie McBride, an undergraduate from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne who was working with Williams through a NASA internship.

Newer missions, such as NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), have continued to study lunar dust. "It's one of those questions that scientists keep coming back to," said McBride.

"Just last week, LRO did some important measurements seeking dust profiles in the lunar atmosphere," said Rich Vondrak, the LRO deputy project scientist at NASA Goddard. LRO has been orbiting the moon since June 2009, and the mission was recently extended through 2015.

And the main objective of NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), scheduled to launch in 2013, is to characterize the moon's atmosphere and dust environment.

This offers another example of how profoundly influential the Apollo data continues to be, observed Noah Petro, a member of the LRO project science team at NASA Goddard. "A mission ends when it ends, but the science continues forever."
